Cast brass Locomotive Crest of the
Duke of Wellingtons Regiment as carried by a Longmoor Military
Railway 0-6-2T built by Kitson (Works No. 2977) in 1886. It was originally
Taff Vale Rly. No. 168 becoming GWR No. 579. Withdrawn by the GWR
in Oct. 1926 the loco went to Longmoor in March 1927 and was named
Kitchener. It was renamed Wellington in 1938
when this crest of the Duke was fitted. The Duke of Wellington although
a Field Marshall was not a commissioned officer in the Royal Engineers
so was not entitled to have a Royal Engineers crest applied above
the nameplate. The loco was scrapped circa 1940 at Longmoor. The crest
is 8.75in dia and is stamped in the back LMR Wellington
& R for right side. The crest is mounted onto a painted
wooden backing board with a replica cast brass Wellington
nameplate in the correct style which is 31in. long. A very nicely
presented pair. A folder of paperwork and photos relating to Wellington
and the Longmoor Military Railway accompanies the lot. |
